Jammu, Jan 25 (IANS) Two days after the Justice J.S. Verma committee report was made public, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Friday to work out a mechanism to "protect dignity" of the women in the state.
A state government spokesman said that they discussed the report recommends changes in the criminal justice system to protect the dignity of women and enhance their safety and security.
The one-hour-long meeting came against in the backdrop of one of the recommendations of the panel, suggesting that review of laws like the stringent Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in conflict zones like Jammu and Kashmir and northeast.
Abdullah is all for the recall of the AFSPA from some parts of the state, but the army is resistant to this idea, even from some specific areas deemed to be peaceful.
The chief minister has proposed an all-party meeting on the issue of the revocation of AFSPA and the protection of women in the state. This suggestion has not found many takers, said informed sources.
According to the sources, the governor however said that army and civil society should be taken on board and appreciated the idea of an all-party meeting on the issue.
