Security tightened in northeast ahead of Republic Day celebrations

Tezpur , Fri, 25 Jan 2013 ANI

Tezpur, Jan 25 (ANI): A security alert has been sounded across India's northeast region after militant outfits called for a boycott of Republic Day celebrations.

To make the Republic Day celebrations peaceful, Assam Police has also intensified its security drill and foiled an attempt by militants to create instability in the state.

On January 19, they apprehended two NDFB (IK Sangbijit-Group) militants in Tezpur, and recovered arms and ammunition from them.

It is believed that the militants wanted to create trouble during the Republic Day celebrations.

"All preparations are going well. We have taken various measures to prevent untoward incidents in the state," said S N Singh, IGP, Law and Order, Assam

.

Five insurgent groups including the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Coordination Committee (CorCom), and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) have called for a boycott of the Republic Day.

The security forces also carried out safety drills on the streets of Guwahati, Imphal and other major cities to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during the celebrations.

On January 22 in Manipur, the Army claimed to have foiled an attempt to plant explosives on Republic Day celebration while eliminating four suspected UNLF/PLA cadres in Churachandpur near the Indo-Myanmar border.

"In view of the general strikes, shutdown and boycotting of celebrations by various anti-social elements and organizations. The district police have already taken the necessary security measures to disrupt any such attempts of the anti-social elements to disrupt the celebrations," said K. Jayanta Singh, Superintendent of Police for Imphal West.

Insurgent outfits in the northeast have for years boycotted national events and have staged violent attacks in the run up to the celebrations to make their presence felt. However, the people in the region are upbeat about the celebrations and take part in them enthusiastically. (ANI)
