Gender ratio in Tripura electoral rolls increases

Tripura,Politics, Sat, 12 Jan 2013 IANS

Agartala, Jan 12 (IANS) The final electoral rolls of Tripura published Saturday showed a record increase of the gender ratio in the state to 964 females to 1,000 males, Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Ashutosh Jindal said here.

"Though I have no exact data readily available, the sex ratio is much higher than the national average and many states in India," he told reporters after the publication of the final electoral rolls.

In last year's electoral rolls in Tripura, there were 958 female voters for every 1,000 males.

On the basis of these final rolls, which were Saturday formally handed over to the five recognised national political parties, the crucial assembly elections in the Left-ruled Tripura will be held Feb 14.

After about a four-month-long summary revision of the voters list, the much expected final roll was published Saturday simultaneously across the state.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has also sent as many as 13 observers from New Delhi to Tripura following the Congress's complaint about discrepancies in the summary revisions of the voters' lists.

According to the final rolls, in all 2,352,505 voters including 1,154,656 females have been enrolled in the electoral rolls increasing 75,090 voters from last year's rolls.

Around 46,260 names were deleted from the electoral rolls due to various reasons, including death and shifting of places.

According to the draft electoral lists published Sep 20 last year, the total number of voters in Tripura was 2,277,415 including 1,114,100 women.

The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Tripura has condemned the Congress' series of allegations to the ECI about inaccuracy in the voters' list and alleged that the opposition party has tried to delay the process of revising electoral rolls aiming to promulgate president's rule in the state.

The Congress, however, denied the allegations.

The northeastern state of Tripura, the country's only Left-ruled state, will see assembly polls Feb 14 to elect its new state assembly.

Meghalaya and Nagaland will have polling Feb 23.

Results of all three states' assembly polls will be announced Feb 28, Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath announced in New Delhi Friday.

The assemblies in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland have 60 seats each.

The five-year terms of these assemblies expire March 10, March 16 and March 26 respectively.
