Agartala, Jan. 3 (ANI): A bumper orange crop has left growers in Tripura delighted. They are enjoying the benefits of a high dividend.

The Jampui Hills, popularly known as Tripura's Orange Producing Valley, has reported an increase in orange production.

Giving details of orange production in Agartala, Director of the Horticulture Department, Tripura, D P Sarkar, said the state has recorded over 6000 metric tonnes of production.

"About 150 hectares is now having the bearing plants and the orange plants are coming up excellently, the fruits are coming up excellently. This year, we have got roughly about 4000 metric tonnes of orange fruit from the Killa area," said Sarkar.

"Other than this in the south Tripura district we have another area, Magroom in the Satchand subdivision, there also we are further expanding our orange plantation and we are getting roughly 2000 to 3000 metric tonnes," he added.

Sarkar attributed the improvement in production to recommendations of the National Research Centre for Citrus (NRCC), Nagpur in Maharashtra.

Orchid owners in the region also expressed happiness over earning good profit as compared to outcomes of the previous years.

"Earlier, all orange plantations were dying but this year the production has improved and until now I have sold worth 95,000 rupees. I am not sure about the total quantity of my production but I know that the production has drastically improved," said Lalpuiha, a farmer.

Of the total 3,000 hectares area under orange cultivation in Tripura, the Jampui Hill alone has around 2007 hectares devoted to orange production and hence it is justifiably regarded as the orange bowl of Tripura.

The Jampui Hills is in the tri-junction of the northeast along Tripura-Mizoram and Chittangong Hill Track of Bangladesh. (ANI)
