Union minister for Culture Kumari Selja has said that the ministry of tourism has informed her that the ministry does not compile data on the number of pilgrims or tourists visiting Amarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath.

She was answering a query in the Lok Sabha. She also said that these destinations do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as these are not in the list of monuments of national importance.

However, the Ministry of Tourism provides financial support to the state governments (including to Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand where the sites are located) so that they can develop tourism infrastructure in the state. In addition to this, the ministry of also support schemes devoted to the infrastructure development, land revenue generation projects and capacity building.
