An earthquake of moderate intensity witnessed in the northeast part of country. The tremor, which was felt on Sunday afternoon, was moderate intensity and there have not been any news of causalities or damage so far.
According to the Regional Seismological Centre here, the epicentre was in Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur in Assam. The quake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale occurred around 3 p.m.
Besides Meghalaya and Nagaland, the other states where the tremors were felt included Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
It is noted that India's northeast is considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.
