Kapil Sibal to meet IIT Directors Today

With the rejection of common entrance examination proposal by IIT-Delhi following IIT Kanpur, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has called for a meeting of IIT Directors today in order to discuss their issues and concerns regarding the proposal.

The meeting of Sibal with the IIT Joint Admission Board, has been scheduled ahead of meeting with the IIT Council that is to be held on June 27 meeting.

The IIT council, which is governed by HRD Minister of India, comprises of directors of all the 16 IITs as members, which makes them the highest decision making authority for the IITs.

Earlier, on May 28, Kapil Sibal had proposed for a common entrance examination for admission in all the premier engineering institutes of the India including IITs, NITs and IIITs from 2013. IIT, Kanpur was the first to reject the proposal considering the standard of the institutes may degrade. Soon after, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi also joined the rejection team and sooner the other institutes are likely to support them.

The Board will discuss connotations of the government's announcement of single entrance test under which the aspiring candidates for IITs and other central institutes like NITs and IIITs will have to sit for a common entrance test from 2013 under a new format of which will also consider the 12th board results.
