Earth hour: All set for an hour dark

As the clock strikes 8.30 in evening, houses, offices, public buildings and even the Rashtrapati Bhavan will turn its light off for the sake of Earth hour duration. Its one-hour of darkness will be especially to aware people for the spotlight on climate change.

An initiative started by World Wide Fund WWF) which will long for 60 minute switching off all the electrical equipment will be beneficial for the aware people on reducing carbon footprints.

During this period not only Delhi but also 5,500 cities across the globe will be turn off lights. The move, which is running in its fifth years from its inception, is organised annually on the last Sunday of March.

Social networking sites are doing a lot for the move to aware the people for the same. Not only sites but also other voluntary organisation has taken the initiative to educate people for the Earth hour.

The impact of the move can be easily understood when even Rashtrapati Bhavan is ready to celebrate Earth Hour. According to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, during 8.30 PM to 9.30 PM. all non-essential lights in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's Estate and also the Family Wing of the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, shall be switched off. The Residents Welfare Association of the President's Estate has been involved in preparations for observation of Earth Hour.

It is noted that Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and over 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. India joined the campaign in 2009 and currently, mainly the urban centres in the country are participating. (With inputs from IANS)
