New Delhi, Dec 30 (IANS) Awareness on the pitfalls of drunken driving will be the focus of the Road Safety Week campaign-2013, which will be observed across the country from Jan 1-7 next year, an official said.

"The Road Safety Week this year has focused on the risks to road users because of drunk driving," said K.K. Kapila, chairman of International Road Federation (IRF), a Geneva-based global body for road safety.

Organised by the ministry of road transport and highways and the India chapter of IRF, a meet with a theme -- 'Stay Alive, Don't Drink and Drive' -- will be organised in the national capital.

Kapila said that India accounts for 10 percent of the annual global road deaths with nearly 400,000 accidents reported in India every year -- about 142,000 of which prove fatal. Nearly 500,000 people suffer injuries in road accidents every year.

During the road safety meet, experts will deliberate on ways to cut down road fatalities, improve public transport system, rationalize routes, according to an IRF statement.

The experts will also discuss a plan for optimum use of public transport, better management of traffic system, measures for traffic signal synchronisation and redesigning of intersections.

IRF said that banning of parking on arterial roads and primary roads, provision for cycle tracks, and parking facilities would also be discussed.
