Ludhiana, Dec 29 (ANI): Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari today appealed for calm across the country following death of the Delhi gang-rape victim in a Singapore Hospital.

The Delhi gang-rape victim, whose assault in the national capital triggered nationwide protests, died in a Singapore hospital on Saturday of injuries suffered to her brain from the cardiac arrest she suffered at the Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday night.

"Convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of this brave heart. She waged a relentless battle to live unfortunately, but destiny had willed it otherwise. Our hearts cry today," Tewari said.

"We would like to appeal to all our brothers and sisters across the length and breadth of this great land to maintain peace," he added.

The Delhi Police has also urged people to maintain calm in wake of death of the gang-rape victim in a Singapore Hospital, announcing that India Gate, Raisina Hill and its surrounding areas that comprise the national capital's power centre would be closed for the general public.

The police ramped up security to prevent any potential flare up of violence or protests as the gang rape victim died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital.

Entire Central Vista including Rajpath, Vijay Chowk and all road leading to India Gate will be closed for general traffic.

Ten stations Pragati Maidan, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Race Course, Khan Market and Jorbagh will remain closed.

A large number of police personnel were deployed at Rajpath, the stretch connecting India Gate and Raisina Hill where larges cale protests were witnessed last weekend, and roads leading to this was closed. (ANI)
