New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) The alleged beating of media persons by police during caning of protesters agitating over a woman's gang-rape here the day before was condemned by journalists Monday, saying it was totally unacceptable.

"The lathicharge and use of water cannon targeting media persons is totally unacceptable and condemnable," said T.R. Ramachandran president of Press Club of India.

Several journalists, who were covering protests at India Gate, were allegedly hit by police personnel caning protesters.

"Media has not provoked the protesters. Police is escaping from their duty," said Indian Women's Press Corps president T.K. Rajalakshmi.

"I was standing at India Gate talking with the people. I was carrying my channel I-card. In the meantime, seven-eight policemen came and despite knowing that I am a reporter they started hitting me," said 27-year-old media person Ashutosh Mishra from Asian News International (ANI).

"Police chased and beat us," said Vineeta Yadav, ABP News channel reporter.

Yadav was standing near the Press Club of India on Rafi Marg when she was allegedly beaten up by policemen.

Journalists also took out a protest march outside the Press Club of India condemning the police attack on media.
