Patna, Dec.24 (ANI): Underprivileged girls are being given karate training as part of a self-defence programme in Patna, Bihar, amid growing public outrage over the lack of safety for women across the country.
One of the organisers of the self -defence classes, Zeba Khatoon, said: "Not a lot of people come forward to give training to underprivileged girls. Even their guardians are scared and not supportive in providing them self defence training. It is important for girls to stand on their own two feet and be independent. They need to move out of their closet and ensure that they can protect themselves from eve teasing or any women related crime. Parents of the girls need to understand this and encourage them."
Khatoon added that at the moment she is training 150 underprivileged girls and the numbers are increasing each day.
Young girls expressed their disappointment over constant gender discrimination.
""Sometimes our parents discriminate between a girl and a boy. Boys in certain situations have an edge over girls and this is not right. I understand that it is important to fight for one's right," said Reshma, a young girl learning karate.
Recently in New Delhi, a 23-year-old victim was attacked, raped and then thrown from a moving bus in New Delhi.
The spasm of violence over the weekend saw police use batons, teargas and water cannon against protesters around the city. Protests have also taken place in other Indian cities but they have been more peaceful.
The ferocity of the protests in the capital, many driven by social media, appear to have caught the government by surprise. Singh made his first comment on the rape in a statement on Sunday, almost over a week after the event.
New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on an average every 18 hours, according to police figures. (ANI)
