Failed girl students keep teachers under siege

Kolkata, Dec 18 (IANS) A group of girl students, who had flunked their exam, kept their teachers including the headmistress under siege for about 24 hours demanding they be allowed to sit for the higher secondary examination.

The 29 students of Rishi Aurobindo Balika Vidyalaya at Santoshpur on Kolkata's southern outskirts let the teachers go only after an assurance from the West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Examination that their answer-scripts would be looked into again.

The agitating students had failed in the test conducted by the school ahead of the higher secondary examination. Altogether 104 students had taken the test.

The students, accompanied by their guardians, surrounded the teachers from around 3 p.m. Monday when they came to know about the results.

"How can so many of us fail the test? Our answer scripts have not been properly checked. The headmistress had told us earlier that out of 104 examinees, 14 cleared the exams, while the other 90 have been allowed after consideration," said a student.

The siege was finally lifted after two officials of the council rushed to the school and met the teachers, headmistress and students.

"We will see what can be done. We have sealed the answer-scripts of all the 104 students. We are taking them to our office. We will see how many students can be given pass marks," said the council's secretary Achintya Pal.

The students were asked to come to the council office Tuesday.

The headmistress, Srimati Ghosh, however, said the council's action had undermined the authority of the school and the teachers were upset.

"Teachers feel this is humiliating. It will set a bad precedent," she said.
