Gaya, Dec. 18 (ANI): State authorities along with the social organizations introduced water harvesting scheme in the Maoist infested areas in Gaya district of Bihar.

Authorities in the district have launched a series of intensive development schemes to counter the penetration of Maoists in rural pockets.

The District Development Manager of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Sharda Nath told the reporters on Monday that around six to seven dams have been constructed under this scheme.

"There was not a single drop of water for the animals and people, when we are planning. 160 to 170 acres of land is being used for farming after two dams have been built. The farmers have started growing wheat and rice and they are very excited," said Nath.

They have also implemented plans to introduce latest irrigation facilities under government-sponsored schemes.

The state authorities are working in close coordination with the non-governmental organisations to start projects in Maoist-affected areas like Devchandih, Bhadbar, Vijua, Barwadih, Harni and Gansa areas of the district.

The coordinator of the non-government organisation (NGO) 'Samanvaya Tirtha', Om Satyam Trivedi said that the most significant impact of the project was that the water table, which was approximately 160 feet below the normal level, has been raised by nearly 30 to 35 feet.

" First and foremost, people have got a relief from the drinking water crisis. The water Thus, you can see that lot of improvement has taken place in the water table. The rise in the water table has made the diesel pumps functional which were not in operation for a long time," said Trivedi.

"Earlier, we used to migrate to other places to earn our livelihood. But with the construction of the dams, we have started farming. We have started growing rice, wheat, pulses. The ponds are being filled with water," said Bhuiya, a local farmer.

Till now nearly six barrages have been constructed at a cost of Rs. 33 lakhs since 2011 and around 450 acres of land have been irrigated so far.

Approximately 243 families have availed the benefit of the scheme. (ANI)
