Chaos in Rajya Sabha over quota bill, SP MP asked to leave

New Delhi,Politics, Thu, 13 Dec 2012 IANS

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Chaos returned to the Rajya Sabha Thursday, soon after leaders expressed their faith in Chairman Hamid Ansari and the dignity of the house, with the Samajwadi Party (SP) creating a ruckus over the quota bill and an angry deputy chairman P.J. Kurien asking that its member be evicted.

SP leaders started raising slogans saying they didn't want reservations in government job promotions, soon after the upper house met following the lunch break. When the din showed no signs of abating, Kurien adjourned the house for 10 minutes.

The unruly scenes continued when the house met with SP leaders gathering near the chair and continuing their loud slogans.

An angry Kurien then told SP leaders Ram Gopal Yadav and Naresh Agrawal to evict Arvind Kumar Singh from the house. "Please withdraw him," Kurien said.

"If you don't, I will be forced to call the marshals," he added.

When the party members continued their slogan shouting, Kurien announced that the house be adjourned for 10 minutes.

Earlier in the morning, following BSP chief Mayawati's attack on Hamid Ansari the day before, the house had come together to express faith in the chair.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said respect for the chairman of the house was necessary for the dignity of the house.

"I would like to convey that our government has full faith and highest regard for you. Respect of the chair is maintaining the dignity of the house," the prime minister said.

He was joined by Mayawati, opposition leader Arun Jaitley as well as other members of the house.

Manmohan Singh said the government would work with "all sections of the house" to ensure that the chair is respected.
