J-K observes shutdown over life imprisonment to JKLF members

General news, Mon, 10 Dec 2012 ANI

Srinagar, Dec 10 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on Monday called for a shutdown in the state over the court's verdict awarding life imprisonment (until death) to two youth.

Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Yasin Malik protested against the judgment of the court awarding life sentence to two of its men Showkat Ahmed and Nazir Ahmed Sheikh.

A court in Jammu on last Monday (December 03) awarded life sentences to two Kashmiri youth, Nazir Ahmed Sheikh and Showkat Ahmed, who were arrested in 1990 and had spent nearly 15 years in jail without trial.

Recently both of them were arrested again, after they were released seven years ago.

All shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices would remain close and the public transport would also remain off from the roads.

In an attempt to avert any untoward situation, the authorities have deployed police and paramilitary forces at vital places across the city.

"Two men were awarded life sentence. They are already in the jail. But the court has now awarded them life imprisonment (until death). Therefore, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) has called for a shutdown," Aizaz Bhatt, a local, told the reporters.

In November, the High Court also awarded life imprisonment to the Chairman of the Muslim League, Mohammad Qasim Faktoo. (ANI)
