Colourful, intricate and realistic are synonymous with Sathe's work. The 77-year old mechanical engineer, who has been engaged in the art of making dolls, has won many a hearts with his variety of work.

His daughter, Shima Deshmukh, said that the specialty of these Japanese dolls lies in the fact that each one is distinct from the other.

"35 years ago, my father learnt the art of making Japanese dolls. About six to seven years ago when we were roaming on the streets of Mumbai, we came across some Chinese dolls. We knew how beautiful Japanese dolls are. So, we were not too happy to see these Chinese dolls and the worst part was that they all looked the same. The specialty of Japanese dolls is that each one is different from the other," she said.

According to reports, Sathe uses waste materials like dental stone, clay, thermocol, cloth and fibreglass to create intricate and beautiful dolls.

He has dolls showcasing Kathakali, Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Manipuri and Kuchipudi dancers among others.

A visitor, Minali, who was learning Japanese, showed a deep interest in the art and said that she too would love to craft such dolls.

"When I heard about the exhibition, I found it to be very interesting, so I came to see it. We got to see a variety of dolls here; each doll's face expression is different from the other. I really liked that. I have learnt Japanese, so I have a keen interest in this. I got to see a lot of things that I had studied about. I would also like to learn something like this," she said.

Japanese dolls are of many kinds and represent a wide range of characters, from babies to persons of the imperial court, to heroes and gods. (ANI)
