New Delhi, Dec 7 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath on Friday urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to accept its defeat, and said that the people of the country have now understood that the main opposition party is politicising the FDI issue.
"The BJP always makes these allegations and I would wish that they were better losers. They lost in the Lok Sabha they made the allegations, they lost in the Rajya Sabha and they are making these allegations," he said, when asked whether the FDI votes were bought.
Nath emphasized that it's for the respective states to take a final call on whether to implement FDI in the retail sector or not
"I have said so from the beginning that this is nothing, but politics. There is no issue of FDI because FDI has been left to the states. And if there was anything left in this debate, it was pure politics. This is the reaction of the politics of the BJP," he added.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that he urged the leaders of various political outfits recognise the content of the debate ahead of voting on the FDI issue.
"I was just urging the parties to recognise the content of this debate and the content was only political. Because the content was only political, the political parties decided that they are not going to support the politics of the BJP," he said.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M. Venkaiah Naidu on his part expressed disappointment with the UPA's victory in the Rajya Sabha, saying the ruling government would get a fitting reply from the people of the country.
"We might have lost in umbers because of the manipulation of the ruling party. But it's a moral victory. If you go by the speeches made in the house by different parties, overwhelming majority members of the Rajya Sabha has opposed the FDI in retail. So, I am confident they might have had the numbers today, but they will be taught a fitting lesson as and when they go to the people," said Naidu.
"I am sure about it because the government could not give any convincing answer to any of the questions raised by us," he added.
The government won the voting on FDI in multi-brand retail in the Rajya Sabha earlier this afternoon after nearly two days of debate.
The voting took place under Rule 168 of the Rules of Business of the Rajya Sabha. The Samajwadi Party staged a walkout of the Rajya Sabha minutes ahead of voting on the FDI issue.
The government, which required the majority mark to 118, got 123 votes in its favour compared to 109 for the motion moved by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The government had earlier on Wednesday evening won the FDI vote in the Lok Sabha by a margin of 253 votes to 218 votes. (ANI)
