Jharkhand legislators boycott assembly session

Bihar,Politics, Wed, 05 Dec 2012 IANS

Ranchi, Dec 5 (IANS) The Jharkhand assembly was adjourned twice Wednesday after most members boycotted the proceedings of the house over delay in releasing of local area development funds.

When the house assembled at 11 a.m., there were only eight members on the treasury benches of the total 82. There were no members in the opposition.

Both ruling and opposition members boycotted the proceedings as local area development funds meant for them had not been released by the state government in the current financial year.

Assembly Speaker C.P. Singh adjourned the house till noon.

When the house reassembled, the minimum numbers required were again missing, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house till 2 p.m.

The state government provides Rs.3 crore every year to each legislator for development of their constituencies.

"This is not a question of treasury or opposition. These issues are related to legislators' fund," Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shashank Shekhar Bhokta told reporters.

Congress legislator C.S. Dubey said the government should either release the funds or scrap the fund. "We feel embarrassed to meet people in our constituencies."
