New Delhi, Nov 30 (ANI): Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt's wife Shweta Bhatt filed her nomination papers as the Congress candidate from Maninagar assembly constituency against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the move of Shweta Bhatt to contest Gujarat election against Modi.
BJP Mahila Morcha president Smriti Irani said : "Sanjiv Bhatt's so called fight has been exposed, it wasn't a legal fight, was politics. He was fighting on behalf of Congress."
"I think Sanjiv Bhatt's acts are exposed in front of citizens of India. He was motivated by political greed that is why he was against Narendra Modi," she added.
Modi won from Maninagar in 2007 by a huge margin, defeating the Congress candidate.
Gujarat will go to the polls in two phases on December 13 and 17, respectively and the results will be announced on December 20.
Sanjiv Bhatt was suspended after he took on Modi, accusing him of asking the police to go slow on Hindus during the 2002 riots in which more than 1000 people were killed.
He had alleged that he was being persecuted for damaging the testimony against Modi.
In March last year, he sent an affidavit to the Supreme Court alleging that at a meeting in February 2002, Modi had told senior policemen not to interfere when rioting mobs were attacking largely-Muslim neighbourhoods. (ANI)
