South Delhi Municipal Corporation today took the action against property tax defaulters by beating drums outside their properties in Najafgarh and Central Zones. The names of the defaulters were also publicly announced. The action is taken in compliance of the decision taken by the Standing Committee that drums will be played outside the property of tax defaulters, so to develop psychological pressure on property owners.
Assessor & Collector, Mr. B.N. Singh said that they had no other option but to revert to the traditional method of ‘drum beating’ to recover taxes. He said that earlier also these procedure was used to collect taxes but they were discontinued. We have adopted this traditional method of drum beating, so that people pay property tax in time to avoid public embarrassment.
Singh further added that the Corporation witnessed a decrease in property tax collection in last financial year. In year 2010-11 the property tax was Rs. 322 crore and in 2011-12 it went down to Rs. 313 crore. This action is taken to achieve the target fixed for the financial year 2012-13.
