New Delhi, Sat, 24 Nov 2012 NI Wire

Delhi Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami has stated that the city government is committed to ensure issuance of 45,000 additional auto-rickshaw permits as per the instruction of Hon'ble Supreme Court. In case, any irregularity, corruption or loan on high rates gets attention of the city government, it would invite the strictest serious action including cancellation of dealership.

The government would like to make it clear that any irregularity would be treated as an obstacle in implementation of instructions of Hon'ble Supreme Court. This is top priority of the government to facilitate GPS-fitted auto-rickshaws in ample number on Delhi roads to overcome enormous difficulties and complaints of passengers.

Goswami stated that the government has noticed that sale of auto-rickshaws for SC/ST applicants is not picking up. Such applicants may apply to SC/ST Financial Development Corporation to seek loan on reasonable rates. The government has also come to know that a nexus between the dealers, middleman and upto some extent employees of the manufacturing companies is working overtime to extract money.

The government is keeping an eye on such nexus. The Transport Department is ready to set up a special team to oversee the activities of nexus. This would ensure purchase of auto-rickshaws in substantial number. To facilitate this, Transport Department has made special arrangements at Burari, Surajmal Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan and Raja Garden authorities.

To ensure convenience and security of passengers, Delhi require GPS installed auto-rickshaws. The government has since extended the limit of auto-rickshaws purchase upto 35,000. It would soon be extended to 45,000 as per the instructions of Hon’ble Supreme Court. The government would strive to ensure that no passenger has to wait for an auto-rickshaw and there is no instance of harassment, excess charge and reluctance of auto-rickshaw drivers in picking up passengers for journey upto their destination.
