Bhopal municipal authorities demolish ageing water tank

Bhopal, Nov.22 (ANI): Muncipal authorities in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday demolished a damaged water tank that had claimed seven lives and injured more than 30 on November 19.

The overhead water tank of Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) collapsed at Saibaba Nagar at around 1 am.

After the incident, the Municipal cooperation of Bhopal identified four other water tanks-in dire condition - for demolition.

"We had used 4.5 kilograms of explosives for this demolition. While doing this, we had made sure that this old water tank falls in the opposite direction to that of the newly constructed water tank. We also made sure there were no shockwave. We will devise different strategies for the other water tanks and after examining the situation there, we would take the final decision," said Sharad Sarvante, a demolition expert.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced compensation of Rupees 100,000 ($1,817) each to the family members of those killed in the incident on Monday.

Besides, Rupees 25,000 each would be provided to the seriously injured and Rs. 10,000 each to those who suffered minor injuries. (ANI)
