Vodafone to 'cut hundreds of jobs' in Australia

Sydney, Mon, 29 Oct 2012 ANI

Sydney, Oct 29 (ANI): Mobile phone operator Vodafone has planned to axe hundreds of jobs by the end of November in Australia, as the firm faces falling revenues and rising costs.

Vodafone said that 'a significant reduction in the number of office roles across the country to enable a leaner, more effective operating model' without giving a fixed number of job cuts.

"It is vital that we simplify the business to be efficient and to enable growth in the long term," said Vodafone Australia chief Bill Morrow in a statement.

"We need to prioritise every dollar and internal action to count towards an improved customer experience and these changes are designed to deliver just this," Morrow added.

According to a report by BusinessDay, Vodafone that that employs 5000 full-time and contract workers, is expected to axe about 500 positions by the end of the next month.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia reported a 131.1 million loss in the half-year to June 2012, amid faltering revenues and difficulties in the upgrade of its network, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The company generated revenues of 4.59 billion dollars in 2011, down 4.73 per cent on the prior year, the report said. (ANI)
