New Delhi, Oct.25 (ANI): Famous comedian Jaspal Bhatti has died in a road accident near Jalandhar.
Bhatti was going to Nakodar from Bhatinda for the promotion of his upcoming film 'Power Cut'.
According to a report, the accident took place in the Shahkot area of Jalandhar.
Bhatti's car is reported to have collided with a truck near Jalandhar on Wednesday.
His son and actress Surilie Gautam, who was to act in his upcoming film, were injured in the mishap. They have been admitted to a hospital in Ludhiana.
One of Bhatti's close friends, Harpal Singh said Bhatti was coming back after promoting his movie.
"They were coming back. While coming back their vehicle collided with a tree. Doctors told us that he is no more and the other three have got injuries. He was a very good man. I haven't seen man like him ever in my life," said Harpal Singh.
"I had to go Bhatinda with him. One of our friends Mukesh Gautam called me and told me about this. I am still in shock and cannot believe this. He was a very good actor. He used to give social message to people in a comic way. I think no one can replace him, " he added.
Regarded as one of the pioneers of Indian comedy, Bhatti's shows-'Flop Show' and 'Ulta Pulta'-were one of the earliest socio-political satire works on television.
Flop Show was aired in the early 1990s, and is even remembered today. His wife Savita Bhatti produced the show and acted in all the episodes as his wife. Only ten episodes were ever produced, but the show is well remembered. One of his co-actors Vivek Shauq has been very successful since his stint in Flop Show, having found a footing in Hindi cinema.
His other popular shows included Nonsense Private Limited, Mahaul Theek Hai (a satire on Punjab Police), Fanaa, Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe, Jijaji and Comedy Ka King Kaun. He and his wife also took part in the television dance show Nach Baliye
Bhatti was born on March 3, 1955 in Amritsar into a Rajput Sikh family. He graduated from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, as an electrical engineer.
During his days as a college student, he acquired fame for street plays like "Nonsense Club". Most of these plays were spoofs ridiculing corruption in society.
Before venturing into television, he was a cartoonist for the The Tribune newspaper in Chandigarh.
Bhatti is survived by his wife Savita Bhatti, a son, Jasraj Bhatti and daughter, Raabiya Bhatti. (ANI)
