Curfew imposed in J and K's Zanskar town after communal clashes

Srinagar, Thu, 25 Oct 2012 ANI

Srinagar, Oct.25 (ANI): Clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Zanskar in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil District led the local authorities to impose a curfew late on Wednesday.

Reports said that at least three people were injured in the clashes that took place following an attack on a group of 26 Islamic converts.

The coverts, who were originally Buddhists, had earlier migrated to a Muslim-dominated area, before attempting a return to their native place in Zanskar.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Ahfadul Mujtaba was quoted by a national daily, as saying that Buddhist community representatives resisted the return of the converts who belonged to six families.

He said that among the injured was the Tehsildar of Zanskar.

Security has been tightened in the area following the incident. (ANI)
