New Delhi, Oct.24 (ANI): A delegation of the Communist Party of India-Marxist met Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath to request him extends the date of the enrolment of voters in West Bengal.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said that in the wake of the festival of Durga Puja, the majority of people would not able to enroll themselves.

"We have met the election commissioner with the request that the time which they have originally declared for the enrolment of voters and for the publishing of the electoral list in (West) Bengal that time schedule should be revised because for ten days now, the whole of (West) Bengal is shutdown because of the Durga Puja festivities and because of that a large section of the youth will not be in a position to enrol before the end of the schedule as announced now, which is 31st October and apart from the Durga Puja celebrations, you have Eid now on 27th (October). So, till 30th there is no activity that's possible in Bengal," said Yechury.

Yechury added that they have appealed election commission to extend the deadline, till the date they have decided for Jangipur parliamentary constituency.

The state government had ordered a 10-day-long holiday in the state for the festivities.

Hindus worship goddess Durga in nine of her avatars during the festival.

The nine days of Navaratri reflect the nine manifestations of the Goddess Durga. In West Bengal, Orissa and Assam, this festival is celebrated as Durga Puja, whereas in north India, it is known and celebrated as Dussehra.

Navaratri culminates with Dussehra, which is regarded as the day when Lord Ram defeated Ravana, the ruler of Lanka and rescued his abducted wife, Sita.

Dussehra will be celebrated this year on October 24. (ANI)
