Koraput (Odisha), Oct.20 (ANI): Officials in Odisha's Koraput District have revealed that Maoists are preventing meetings of gram sabhas.
According some officials, recently meetings in four panchayat areas of the district could not take place as general public failed to show up because of a fear arising out of a reprisal from Maoists.
"We had spread awareness about the objective of gram sabha meetings. Villagers were urged to attend the meetings, but they didn't turn up, apparently to avoid Naxal wrath, one official was quoted as telling the media.
Meetings could not be held at Borgi and Langalbeda panchayats of Narayanpatna block, Kaberibadi panchayat of Bandhugaon and Onkadelli panchayat of Lamtaput block, the officials said.
Before the meetings, Maoists had apparently put up posters at several places in Narayanpatna, Bandhugaon and Lamtaput blocks asking people of the area to boycott the meetings. (ANI)
