Panaji, Oct 18 (IANS) In a sting operation, police here arrested four human rights activists from Maharashtra, who were extorting money from a hotelier for playing music.

The four accused belonged to a Pune-based organisation called "International Human Rights Watch", but hailed from Ratnagiri, located about 200 km north in Maharashtra.

"We have arrested Dinesh Gandhi, who led the group," police inspector Nolasco Raposo said Thursday.

The official said Gandhi had been extorting money from hotels playing loud music in open areas in the popular beach village of Calangute, claiming that he would complain against them or close them down if they did not shell out money.

Police arrested the quartet in a sting operation while receiving Rs.1.10 lakh from a hotelier, who had been threatened by them.
