Latehar, Oct 17 (ANI): The construction of a bridge in Manika Block of Jharkhand's Latehar district has been stalled and state authorities attribute the reason for the halting of work to possible Maoist attack.
Talking to media here, block chairman, Mahesh Singh said that builders are scared to complete the work due to threats by Maoists.
"This is Maoist area and people here are generally scared of constructing anything. Builders do not float tenders here as they are scared of construction being stalled by the rebels," said Singh.
Singh said that once the bridge is completed it would benefit school children, who currently bear the brunt as they had to risk their lives while crossing the water bodies on makeshift rafts.
"If the bridge is constructed on time, people will not have to travel using makeshift rafts or boats. It will ease their burden and also cut the travelling time. It will be beneficial for the school children and they will also be able to cross with ease," said Singh.
In the last few years, the rebels have stepped up their efforts against the government as well as the locals, after various locals complained that Maoist activities such as killings and abductions increased considerably in the area. (ANI)
