India, Sri Lanka reaffirm commitment to strengthen bilateral civil nuclear cooperation

New Delhi, Oct.12 (ANI): India and Sri Lanka on Friday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral civil nuclear cooperation.

In a joint statement issued here after talks between the Indian and Sri Lankan delegations, the two sides recommitted themselves to using nuclear technology at their disposal for peaceful purposes, and for the mutual benefit of the peoples' of the two countries.

Friday's talks was the first round of discussions between New Delhi and Colombo on comprehensive civil nuclear cooperation.

According to the joint statement, the Indian delegation was led by Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, and included representatives from the Department of Atomic Energy of India.

The Sri Lankan delegation was led by I. Ansar, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of Sri Lanka, and included representatives from the Atomic Energy Authority and the Ministry of Power and Energy of Sri Lanka.

The discussions were held in a warm, friendly and cordial manner. Both sides exchanged views on all aspects of civil nuclear cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation in this area.

According to the statement, it was agreed that the two sides would work towards a comprehensive Agreement on Bilateral Civil Nuclear Cooperation.

Discussions included, inter alia, training of officials, nuclear safety and response to nuclear accidents.

It was agreed that the next meeting would be held in Sri Lanka in the first half of 2013. (ANI)
