Two CRPF troopers killed by Maoists in Bengal

Kolkata, Oct 1 (IANS) Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed allegedly by Maoists in a forest in West Bengal's West Midnapore district in the early hours Monday, police said.

The extremists attacked the paramilitary troopers housed in a new training camp inside Metala forest.

"The CRPF men were suddenly fired upon by the Maoists. Though they fired back, two of our men were killed," said a top police officer.

The ultras fled in the cover of darkness.

The victims were assistant sub-inspector R.N. Mahakud, a resident of Balasore in Odisha, and constable Vijay Bhaskar Reddy from Mehbubnagar in Andhra Pradesh.

This is the second Maoist attack over the last four days in the district, where the rebels have a strong base.

In another incident, the bullet-riddled body of a man was found in Bandhghora village in Jhargram early Friday. A few Maoist posters were found strewn beside him.

The twin Maoist raids have broken the 10-month lull following the death of top rebel leader Kishenji alias Koteshwar Rao, who was killed by security forces November last year.

Since then, around 30 leaders and members of CPI-Maoists active in the state have surrendered.
