Sensex closes 86 points higher; realty, IT index up (Roundup)

Mumbai, Sep 11 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities markets closed 86 points higher Tuesday as realty, IT and power stocks went up.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,711.80 points, closed at 17,852.95 points, 86.17 points or 0.49 percent up from its previous day's close at 17,766.78 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 17,867.85 and a low of 17,677.38 points in intra-day trade. The BSE midcap index was up 16.54 points, while the smallcap index was 38.03 points high.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange closed 0.50 percent up at 5,390 points.

On the sectoral front, the BSE realty index was up 14.40 points, the IT index was up by 52.94 points, and the power index, up 15.10 points.

Top Sensex gainers were HDFC, up 2.49 percent at Rs.758.10; NTPC, up 1.81 percent at Rs.174.70; Gail India, up 1.66 percent at Rs.372.90; BHEL, up 1.41 percent at Rs.200.95; and TCS, up 1.41 percent at Rs.1,391.55.

The main losers included Sterlite Inds, down 4.43 percent at Rs.93.95; Jindal Steel, down 3.13 percent at Rs.333.80; Hero MotoCorp, down 1 percent at Rs.1,802.35; Tata Steel, down 0.79 percent at Rs.376.90; and Hindustan Unilever, down 0.58 percent at Rs.532.15.

Trade in other Asian stock markets was mixed during the day. Japan's Nikkei closed 0.70 percent down, while Shanghai's composite index closed 0.67 percent lower. Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed 0.15 percent up.

At closing bell here, European markets were tading lower. France's CAC was down 0.47 percent and so was Germany's DAX, down 0.05 percent. Britain's FTSE 100 was trading 0.28 percent lower.
