Modi sounds election bugle, appeals for continuance of 'Congress-free Gujarat'(Update: Modi)

Mehsana (Gujarat), Sep 11 (ANI): Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who kick started his election campaign for the forthcoming state assembly polls, on Tuesday urged the people to work towards a 'Congress-free Gujarat'.

Addressing a rally here ahead of his Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra, Modi lashed out at the UPA Government for questioning the CAG that has questioned the Centre's governance and policies.

"They (Congress) question any constitutional authority that raises questions on them. They have even questioned the CAG," he said.

"It has been eight years and have you ever heard the Prime Minister say what he wants to do for the people," he added, while launching a frontal attack on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Alleging that CBI was hand-in-glove with the Congress Party, Modi also hit out at the government for misusing constitutional bodies for its own interest.

Asserting that Gujarat is not dependent on anyone, Modi gave the impression that he would contest the upcoming assembly polls on injustice being meted out to his state.

"I will continue my fight against Congress on only one issue - the issue of fight for justice for Gujarat," he added.

Modi alleged that the Congress party was getting restless and invited its leaders to hold rallies in his state.

"My Congress friends have said that Modi should be opposed wherever he goes. I would ask the Congress that is this democracy? Do you want that when Sonia comes there should be a protest? When Manmohan Singh comes there should be a protest? I would tell my Congress friends not to be restless," said Modi.

"I would ask them to let people listen to both BJP and Congress and let them decide. I would say let the Congress leaders come and hold rallies. My state government will provide the facility," he added.

Modi held the UPA Government responsible for the economic situation, and advised the Prime Minister to follow the Gujarat model of development.

Modi, who is carrying the message of peace and good governance and an arsenal of corruption allegations against the UPA Government at the Centre, started his yatra in the presence of senior BJP leaders President Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley.

The yatra will cover 182 assembly constituencies. Modi will travel through various places in north Gujarat, including Modhera, Chanhasma, Dhinoj, Jotana, Kadi and Thol.

He will use the same 'rath' that veteran BJP leader LK Advani used for his anti-corruption Jan Chetna Yatra last year.

The tour began on a day when spiritual leader Swami Vivekanada made his historic speech at the Chicago Conference of World Religions, 150 years ago.

This is the first major election campaigning exercise being carried out by Modi ahead of elections to be held by the end of this year.

Modi had undertaken a similar yatra in 2002 when he took out his Gaurav Rath Yatra, ahead of the Assembly polls after the post-Godhra riots . (ANI)
