Mehsana (Gujarat), Sep 11 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday kicked off his campaign for the upcoming assembly polls with a month-long state-wide yatra from Becharaji in the state's Mehsana district.
The yatra, which will cover 182 assembly constituencies, started in the presence of former BJP president Rajnath Singh and Rajya Sabha opposition leader Arun Jaitley.
Called the Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra, the tour begins on a day when spiritual leader Swami Vivekanada made his historic speech at the Chicago Conference of World Religions, 150 years ago.
He will travel through various places in North Gujarat, including Modhera, Chanhasma, Dhinoj, Jotana, Kadi and Thol.
He will use the same "rath" that veteran BJP leader LK Advani used for his anti-corruption Jan Chetna Yatra last year.
This is the first major election campaigning exercise being carried out by Modi ahead of elections to be held by the end of this year.
Modi had undertaken a similar yatra in 2002 when he took out his Gaurav Rath Yatra, ahead of the Assembly polls and after his resounding victory in the post-Godhra riots case. (ANI)
