BJP, Congress condemn Thackerays

Mumbai/Patna/ New Delhi, Sat, 08 Sep 2012 ANI

Mumbai/Patna/ New Delhi, Sept 8 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress Party on Saturday condemned statements made by Raj and Bal Thackeray, and added that such comments create discord within communities.

Reacting to Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's latest article in the party mouthpiece 'Dopaharka Saamna,' where he alleged that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar feared that Muslim vote bank would sway away if Narendra Modi was allowed to campaign during the state polls, BJP leader Giriraj Singh said in Patna, "I condemn this statement and would like to register regret. Narendra Modi will come to Bihar for election campaign whenever the state or national leadership decides. There is no pressure from anybody. Where Bal Thackeray is concerned, I am afraid that day is not far when in order to garner votes people would shy away from disclosing their roots or calling themselves Indians."

Bal Thackeray's remarks comes just days after his nephew and founder of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Raj Thackeray branded people from Bihar as 'infiltrators.'

President of Bihar state unit of Congress Mehboob Ali Kaiser said that such remarks create discord among the people of the country.

"This statement indicates madness on his part. Citizens of the country are free to live, work and settle anywhere in India. His statements are dangerous and reflect madness," Kaiser said.

Echoing similar sentiments in New Delhi, senior Congress leader Rashid Mahsood said that elements like Raj and Bal Thackeray are a threat to the country's unity.

"We need to protect the country from such people who want to grab the seat of power by playing politics of hatred and ultimately break the nation. Whether it is the BJP or Shiv Sena; Narendra Modi also tops the list who has committed the carnage of humanity," Mahsood said. (ANI)
