Koraput (Odisha), Sept 6 (ANI): A threat by Maoists is forcing tribal families to flee from their homes here, as the rebels are compelling them to join their militant outfits.
Tired of living under constant threats, more than seven families from Bandhugaon in Koraput district have fled so far, while many others are expected to follow.
Speaking to reporters, Anant Pal, an activist, said that Maoist led tribal outfit, Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh, was harassing tribals by obstructing government assistance under various welfare programmes.
"Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh is forcing locals to join their outfit. When they refused to join the outfit, they obstructed assistance being provided by the government under Below Poverty Line (BPL) scheme and also the financial assistance given to elders. They harassed them with constant threat to their lives," Pal said.
Pal added that despite receiving confirmed reports, police never came to their rescue.
"Police asked the villagers to file an FIR, only then they would come to their rescue. Villagers kept hiding in forests but when they did not receive any help from police, they went to their relatives' home in Raigarh," he said.
Jambula Maleka, a local, said administration never paid heed to poor and was more interested in guarding influential people.
"We were forced to leave the village, otherwise they would have killed our men. We want to go back to our villages but Maoists will not let us live there. Government should protect us and should give us security but it seems that government is only concerned about rich people not the poor like us," she said. (ANI)
