London, September 5 (ANI): Almost three quarters of British women have clothes that do not suit them - and their partners are too scared to tell them, a new study has found.
And nearly one in four of the nation's men regularly wince at their other half's choice in clothes, according to the research.
Half of these men think their partner's outfits are unflattering, while 35 per cent say they are 'frumpy' and 28 per cent believe the offending garments are too tight.
About half of the 918 men surveyed by the British Heart Foundation, however, admitted they couldn't tell the truth without causing some sort of upset, the Telegraph reported.
An overwhelming 72 per cent of 1082 women surveyed admitted they owned clothes that do not suit them.
Shorts are the worst offending items, named by 33 per cent, followed by low-cut tops, skinny jeans and leggings.
Mini skirts were also named by 19 per cent - with both men and women claiming they couldn't reasonably be worn past the age of 42.
Five in ten women claim they are hanging on to the items because they might suit them if they lost weight.
"I can understand why men are reluctant to comment on their partner's appearance," the Telegraph quoted Dr Gayle Brewer, senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Central Lancashire, as saying.
"Physical attractiveness is more important for women in terms of being desirable to the opposite sex.
"Men shouldn't be afraid to say but they need to be tactful - it's all about how you tell someone," Dr Brewer stated.
The British Heart Foundation is urging men and women to donate unwanted outfits to its new campaign the Great British Bag-athon. (ANI)
