Maoist menace in Bihar receding, claims Jairam Ramesh

Patna , Mon, 27 Aug 2012 ANI

Patna, Aug 27 (ANI): Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that the coordinated efforts of security forces in Bihar have been successful in suppressing the Maoist menace.

Congratulating Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the state police for their efforts to tackle the Maoist threat, Ramesh said although Jamui district was still a major Maoist stronghold, as compared to other states suffering in the red corridor, the situation in Bihar was brighter.

"We have achieved success in this state. The CRPF and the state police have worked closely and cooperated well. I do agree that Jamui is still one district where in many blocks the Maoist problem dominates. But as compared to level of Maoist insurgency in Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, the Maoist problem here is not so serious," said Ramesh

He also revealed some points decided during his meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday.

Ramesh said that Kumar has asked for an increase in funds for the Prime Minister's Rural Roads Project and the first installment of 2012-13 for the drinking water supply project.

"The Chief Minister has asked for more financial assistance for the Prime Minister's Rural Roads project. I have assured him that the government will not allow any scarcity in the finances. We also discussed some Peyjal (drinking water supply) projects between the central and state government," he said.

"I expressed my concern that the work was going on at a slow rate but the chief minister has given me the assurance that the work will be up to the mark An amount of rupees 172 crores was demanded by the chief minister. This is the first installment for 2012-13 and the right of Bihar. We will be releasing that money in the next couple of days," he added. (ANI)
