P J Kurien elected Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Aug 21 (ANI): Congress leader P J Kurien was on Tuesday unanimously elected Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

This was announced by Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

Leader of the House and Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh proposed his name to the post, which was seconded by the Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley.

Congratulating Kurien, Hamid Ansari said that he was an able administrator and Parliamentarian.

Manmohan Singh said the unanimous election of Kurien reflects the wide support he had of the members.

Dr Singh also praised Prof. Kurien for his experience and assured support to him in the conduct of the House proceedings.

Meanwhile, Jaitley said Kurien is one of most experienced parliamentarian.

Kurien has been in the national parliament for the last three decades representing Idukki, and Mavelikkara Lok Sabha constituencies. Since 2005, he is a member of the Rajya Sabha. (ANI)
