Elephant killed in Darjeeling due to bullet injuries

Darjeeling , Mon, 20 Aug 2012 ANI

Darjeeling, Aug 20 (ANI): An adult male elephant died due to bullet injuries in the forest region near the Nepal border, here on Monday.

The 25-year-old tusker was under medical treatment for the last three days.

According to a senior Forest Ranger, a herd of elephants crossed India's border and strayed into Nepal in search of food, when certain personnel of border security from Nepal side fired several rounds to scare away the pachyderms.

A couple of bullets hit this elephant before the Forest Rangers from India reached the spot and managed to lead it back into Indian territory.

Veterinarians of the Forest Department treated the injuries, but their efforts went in vain.

"The elephant had strayed towards Nepal and was apparently shot by a bullet. The injury led to its organ failure and swelling in its body, and it eventually succumbed to this injury. We did try our best, we called a veterinary surgeon to save its life but our efforts were in vain," Narayan Chandra Roy, Assistant Divisional Forest Officer, Kurseong Range, said.

Scores of villagers gathered at the spot and paid homage to the departed jumbo. (ANI)
