Contractual workers demand proper government jobs in Kashmir

Srinagar , Wed, 08 Aug 2012 ANI

Srinagar, Aug.8 (ANI): Angry over the state government's failure to guarantee permanent jobs, dozens of contractual workers protested in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Irate contractual workers of the Nehru Yuva Kendra volunteers (NYKV), currently working in different departments of the government, took to the streets and shouted slogans against the leadership for not fulfilling its promises, which it made to the youth of the region.

"We want our problems to be addressed immediately. If this does not happen then the volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra and their families will block the roads, everything will be destroyed as they continue to suffer. The government has turned a deaf ear to our pleas. We have been providing the services of a regular employee in the department since two years which was not part of their work earlier but the government is not even considering that," said Reyaz Ahmad, a protestor.

According to media reports, the state government had assured that it would be soon working towards regularisation of their jobs.

The Jammu and Kashmir state government appointed hundreds of youth on contractual basis in 2010 under a specific scheme for which a meagre compensation of 2500 rupees per month was allotted. (ANI)
