Woman branded witch, beaten up in Rajasthan

Rajasthan,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Sat, 04 Aug 2012 IANS

Jaipur, Aug 4 (IANS) A 65-year old tribal woman in Rajasthan's Udaipur district approached the police Saturday accusing her neighbours of branding her a witch and beating her up, officials said.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against four neighbours on the basis of the complaint of Ganga Devi, a resident of Bhudar village near Rishabhdev town in Udaipur, some 300 km from Jaipur, they added.

"Ganga Devi says that she was sleeping Friday night when four neighbours barged into her house Friday night and started abusing her. They claimed that she was a witch and was casting evil spells on others in the village," said a police officer.

In her statement, Ganga Devi said that she was tied to the bed and beaten up. "She says that her neighbours threatened to kill her if she did not leave the village soon," the officer added.

"It seems the neighbours want to grab her property. We have registered the case against the four men," said the officer.

Several cases of women being branded witches and harassed have been reported in the state.
