New Delhi, Aug 4 (ANI): India has abstained from Saudi Arabia drafted resolution on Syria in the United Nations General Assembly.
India objected to the specific reference to the decision of the League of Arab States who called for President Bashar al-Assad to step down from power and for other UN members to severe diplomatic relations and contacts with Syria.
"It is unfortunate that this element of the present resolution was not removed, and hence we have abstained from the resolution today," Indian envoy to United Nations, Hardeep Puri, said after the voting in UNGA.
The 193-nation assembly approved the Saudi-drafted resolution with 133 votes in favor.
Others countries like Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa too were not in support of the provisions demanding regime change and sanctions. The 193-member General Assembly ultimately passed the resolution that denounced Syria's crackdown on its people and demanded that the country lockdown its chemical and biological weapons.
After the vote, India also raised concerns over the gross human rights violations by all sides, and also condemned the terrorist acts in Syria.
Indian envoy to UN said: "We call upon all parties to dissociate themselves from terrorist groups and ensure that no space is provided for those groups."
India also stressed that UN should play a pro-active role in Syria and no unilateral action should be resorted to.
India also urged international community to close ranks and send a united message to the Syrian parties to walk back from their military approach and resolve the crisis through an inclusive Syrian-led political process.
More than 10000 people have been killed in a 17th month conflict between the Assad-led government and the rebels. (ANI)
