Chamoli/ Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Aug 3 (ANI): Relief work for passengers, stranded here due to repeated landslides, incessant rains and cloudburst is in full swing, chief minister Vijay Bahuguna said here on Friday.
The landslides in various parts of Chamoli left thousands of pilgrims stranded on the highway, while killing one person.
Interacting with mediapersons in Dehradun, Bahuguna said that landslides were an unavoidable reality in various parts of the state but the administration was fully equipped to tackle the after effects.
"Landslides are imminent due to excessive rainfall and we can't prevent them, but the administration is making all the efforts to clear the road. Wherever landslides are happening in Uttarakhand, we are in touch we the local administration and we have installed high powered cranes to clear the roads and we have also ensured all facilities for the stranded passengers or devotees," he said.
On being asked about the specific facilities being provided to the stranded passengers, Bahuguna informed that drinking water, milk and medicines are being provided and mobile vans have also been deployed.
Executive director, Department of Disaster Management, Piyush Rautela, informed that atleast 1500 passengers were directly affected by the landslide and the clearing process was being delayed as rubbles continued to bury the path.
"All efforts are being made to open the road and about 1500 devotees are stranded there.
The road is being opened on temporary basis. Landslides are happening continuously and as we clear it and open the road for passengers they again get blocked," Rautela said.
A woman identified as Pramila Rai was buried alive when cloudburst caused boulders to descend from a hill, rumbling downwards and destroying a resort.
Traffic on both sides of the road got affected as long queues of vehicles, passenger buses and trucks laden with goods were seen upto several kilometres as they waited for the clearance work to be completed on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway. (ANI)
