Barasat MLA does a u-turn after traumatising eve teasing victim

Barasat (West Bengal) , Sun, 29 Jul 2012 ANI

Barasat (West Bengal), July 29 (ANI): After shamelessly blaming a teenaged girl, who was eve teased by local goons at the Barasat station, saying she was provocatively dressed and hence invited trouble, Barasat MLA and Trinamool Congress leader Chiranjeet Chakravarty has now claimed he was misquoted by the media.

This after his comments drew serious flak from the West Bengal Congress.

Speaking about the incident earlier the MLA had said: "To an extent, even women are responsible for eve teasing. The size of their skirts and dresses are changing over time, which is definitely entertaining for men. It is ok if this is just an appreciation but it is not right if the woman is teased."

The Trinamool Congress MLA's comments drew some serious flak from several quarters with the West Bengal Congress calling the comments unacceptable.

The comments even drew flack from the victim's family.

The victim's father, reacting to the comment made by the MLA said: "As a father, the MLA's comments have really hurt me. As a figure of authority, his comments on women (mothers, sisters and daughters) have not just hurt me, but even the people of Barasat. I did not expect this sort of a comment from him." (ANI)
