Kashmir shuts down to protest Bandipora encounter

Srinagar, Sat, 28 Jul 2012 ANI

Srinagar, July 28 (ANI): Acceding to the separatists' call for shutdown to protest the recent killing of a youth by the army, the city wore a deserted look on Saturday.

The shutdown, called by Hurriyat Conference leader, hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was observed in remembrance of Hilal Ahmad Dar, 27, who was shot dead in an encounter launched by military forces at Bandipora district on Wednesday.

"Syed Ali Shah Geelani has given a call for Kashmir shutdown to protest the killing of a youth two days back in Bandipora district by Indian army without any reason. All districts of Kashmir are closed. People are giving good response to the shutdown," Zubair Ahmad, a local, said.

Separatists claim that army personnel killed innocent Dar in a fake encounter. However, Army has denied the allegation and maintained that he was a militant.

Defence Minister A. K. Antony has ordered a probe into the matter and investigation is underway.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been deployed all over the region to maintain peace. (ANI)
