Guwahati, July 2 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are scheduled to undertake an aerial survey of flood-affected areas of Assam today, as the situation in the state continues to remain grim.
Dr. Singh and Gandhi will be conducting an aerial survey of Majuli Island, which has suffered serious damage in the flood. They will later hold talks with ministers and senior state government officials in Guwahati before flying back to New Delhi.
The current spell of floods and landslides has reportedly claimed 77 lives in Assam so far.
The recent flood, which is the worst in the state in the last eight years, has affected more than 19 lakh people with 23 of the state's 27 districts said to be under water.
The Prime Minister had earlier on June 28 announced an ex-gratia assistance to the families of those who had lost their lives in the recent floods in Assam.
An assistance of one lakh rupees was announced for the next of kin of each of the deceased from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
The Prime Minister had then directed to extend all possible help to the state government in the relief operations.
Dr. Singh had also spoken to Assam Health Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma and enquired about the flood situation in the state.
He also spoke with Defence Minister A. K. Antony, and urged him to provide full Army assistance for the rescue and relief operations in the affected flood areas. (ANI)
