Lucknow, June 19 (IANS) The Uttar Pradesh government Tuesday took the first step towards building a bus rapid transit system (BRTS) here with the constitution of a panel to identify an agency to make a detailed project report.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav constituted the committee under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani.

This committee would have officials from the public works department, finance and planning department, Lucknow administration and police.

The chief minister said that the housing and urban planning department would be the nodal department for the project that aims to reduce pollution and offer affordable means of transport.

Besides low-floor buses, the system would feature state-of-the-art stations and ticketing through smart cards. It will be linked to feeder buses.
