Mathura, June 17 (ANI): A campaign demanding cleaning of rivers Ganga and Yamuna was initiated by the activists here on Sunday.
Scores of locals joined hands with activists and Hindu priests in performing special prayers to kick off the campaign on the riverbanks of Yamuna.
Activists chanted hymns while seeking blessings from Hindu deities for their initiative's success in seeking the Centre's attention towards the polluted rivers.
"The only objective of this campaign is save the dying rivers of Ganga and Yamuna and the millions of people who are dependant on the river for their livelihood," Sudha, a river activist, said.
Campaigners began their journey holding 'kalash' from the banks of river Ganga in Varanasi while halting in Prayag and Kanpur before camping here.
They would be travelling to New Delhi and meet representatives of the Central government, seeking their attention over the condition of the rivers. (ANI)
